Synopsis

In the aftermath of the 2019 protests, Hongkongers are leaving by the thousands for the United Kingdom. They search for a freer future, yet are burdened by the guilt of leaving their homeland behind.

The Grass Is Greener on the Other Side follows two Hongkongers as they migrate to the UK, tracing the complex emotions and struggles that accompany departure. A teenager says goodbye to classmates and friends, carrying a sense of survivor’s guilt as he walks through the open grasslands of Britain. A young father welcomes his Hong Kong-born son and must consider what identity he wants to pass on to the next generation.

Through these intimate stories, the film explores post-traumatic anxiety, diaspora, and the tension between personal identity and one’s role in a changing society. How can people move on from collective trauma? Where can they truly find home?
